Nahuatl is the Aztecan (Nahuan) branch of Uto-Aztecan and the language of the Aztec empire; its modern varieties are spoken across central Mexico. Classical Nahuatl left a large corpus of colonial-era documents and remains the largest single Uto-Aztecan language by number of speakers.
