Andre Martinet was a French linguist and a leading figure of European structural and functional linguistics, known especially for his studies of linguistic economy and for the theory of double articulation, the idea that language combines a small inventory of meaningless sound units into a much larger set of meaningful units. His functionalist approach to syntax, developed while teaching at Columbia University and the Sorbonne, led to a sharp and public disagreement with Noam Chomsky's generative program.
