French comparative linguist, a student of Ferdinand de Saussure, who became the most influential figure in early twentieth-century Indo-European studies. He formalized the concept of grammaticalization, the process by which autonomous words become grammatical markers, and through his chair at the College de France from 1905 trained a generation of linguists including Emile Benveniste, Georges Dumezil and Andre Martinet.
